On the street with the vendors of West Harlem

New York City has over 20,000 street vendors. Victor Swezey, Deputy Editor at the Columbia Daily Spectator's City On Saturdays and Sundays, the area around Montefiore Park in West Harlem becomes an open air market. Street vendors sell everything from household necessities to books and antique vinyl records—some of the 20,000 across the city who face unpredictable weather, police harassment, and an ineffective permit system every day as they seek to make a living. Spectator recently talked to a few of these vendors in West Harlem to hear their stories

Columbia Student Homophile League

On Oct. 28, 1966, Columbia College sophomore Stephen Donaldson, prominent gay rights activists Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings, University Chaplain John Dyson Cannon, and college administrators sat down in Earl Hall for a meeting. When they left, the first gay student organization, Columbia Student Homophile League, was established. In this video, we sat down with one of SHL’s founding members, Seana Anderson, to talk about the club’s origins and the barriers it faced on its way to University approval.
